Anti-South Asian ‘hate speech’ has exploded online in US, report finds

Al Jazeera EnglishSep 28, 2026

A recent report highlights a significant increase in anti-South Asian hate speech in the United States, linking it to various socio-political factors. The Center for the Study of Organized Hate found that hate posts targeting South Asians surged by 240% on social media, particularly on the platform X, between January 2024 and June 2026. This rise is attributed to immigration politics, economic anxiety, and the growing visibility of South Asians in American society.

The report reveals that over 542,000 hateful posts were identified, with derogatory slurs and narratives targeting South Asians, including accusations of job theft and demographic threats. The researchers noted that the rhetoric often conflates different ethnic and religious groups, portraying them as a monolith, which exacerbates existing prejudices.

Political actions, such as changes to the H-1B visa program and inflammatory statements from political leaders, have also fueled this hostility. The report emphasizes that the increasing visibility of South Asians in politics and society has led to a backlash, with economic resentment being weaponized against them, further entrenching stereotypes and discrimination.
