New scaled-down plans for Muslim cemetery near Peterborough
BBC News - Middle EastDate unknown
Plans for a new Muslim cemetery near Peterborough have been revised significantly, reducing the size by about 80%. The new proposal by Green Meadows charity outlines a burial ground of 1.73 hectares, addressing previous concerns regarding the original application, which was deemed too large for local needs.
The revised cemetery design includes an informal burial layout, a 54-space car park, and outdoor ablution facilities, ensuring that burials can be conducted in accordance with Islamic traditions. The planning statement emphasizes the urgent need for additional Muslim burial space in Peterborough, as the current facilities do not adequately meet the community's religious requirements.
Support for the cemetery has come from local imams and the National Burial Council, highlighting its importance for preserving cultural identity and strengthening community ties. However, local parish councils previously opposed the larger plans, citing concerns about the development's compatibility with the rural landscape. The final decision from Peterborough City Council is still pending.
