Gaza malnutrition and starvation at ‘catastrophic’ levels: Health Ministry

Al Jazeera EnglishAdded 6 hours ago

The situation in Gaza has reached a critical point, with malnutrition and starvation affecting a staggering 67 percent of the population. The Palestinian Ministry of Health has reported that these conditions have been exacerbated by ongoing conflict and restrictions on aid, leading to catastrophic levels of food insecurity. As winter approaches, the humanitarian crisis is expected to worsen, with children and the elderly being the most affected.

Recent statistics reveal that at least 466 Palestinians have succumbed to malnutrition since 2024, with children making up a significant portion of these deaths. The health ministry has highlighted alarming rates of anaemia among pregnant women, which have surged to 61 percent, indicating a dire need for immediate intervention. UNICEF has echoed these concerns, emphasizing the fragile state of food security and the necessity for continuous humanitarian aid.

Calls for international action have intensified, with Gaza's Health Ministry urging for unrestricted access to food and medical supplies. The ongoing blockade and recent halts in commercial goods entering the Strip have further complicated the situation, leaving many families reliant on humanitarian assistance. Without immediate support, the potential for a prolonged famine looms large over the region.
