UN food agency cuts Gaza assistance by one-third amid funding shortages
Middle East MonitorAdded 6 hours ago
The UN World Food Program has announced significant cuts to food assistance in the Gaza Strip due to funding shortages. This reduction means that approximately half a million people will lose critical support as winter approaches, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation.
Currently, the WFP is assisting 1.1 million vulnerable individuals, a decrease from 1.6 million just last month. The cuts include halving food rations, with families now receiving only one food parcel instead of two, and a reduced supply of wheat flour.
Additionally, the number of daily hot meals provided has dropped significantly, from 250,000 to 150,000. Families in hard-to-reach areas will now receive meals every other day, highlighting the challenges faced by those living near the Israeli-controlled zones.
